A COILED CORD by M. Frazao

Modeling
[04.12.00] Updated for Studio 9.5

In this lesson you will learn how to model a coiled cord by sweeping a generation curve around a rail curve using the Monorail tool.

You will also learn how to use a Construction Plane to build a generation curve planar to the angle of which the provided rail curve was created in. This will allow the generation curve to sweep around the rail curve in a natural manner.

STEP ONEDownload the file phone.rar and open it in Studio.

STEP TWOIn the perspective window, hold down the Shift and Alt keys to bring up the Viewing panel.
Click on the bookmark swatch to view the preset bookmarks.
Select the preset bookmark named close_up
The camera view takes you up-close to the starting point of the rail curve.

STEP THREEIn the next few steps you will position a construction plane to the rail curve start point.
You will also constrain the construction plane to match the angle of which the rail curve meets the phone receiver
Select Construction -> Plane.

STEP FOUR
In the Top view window, hold down the Ctrl key to activate the magnet function.
Click near the rail curves' start point.
The construction plane jack appears.

STEP FIVEThe construction plane jack is color coded red, green and blue, representing the colors of X,Y and Z world space.
The orientation of the cp jack should be planar to the angle of which the rail curve meets the telephone body.
Click on the red dotted arc manipulator, close to the cpY constrained manipulator, represented by a green sphere, to activate the jacks' X rotation and Y constraint

STEP SIXIn the right view window (for viewing purposes) hold down the Ctrl and Alt keys to activate the curve snap function.
Click somewhere in-between the starting point and the second control vertex (U) on the rail curve.
Notice how the construction plane jack reorients its' position so that its' Y axis is constrained to the angle of which the rail curve meets the telephone body.

STEP NINE
Select Xform -> Nonpscale.
Type in a value of 0.075, 0.15, 0.0.

STEP TENSelect Xform -> Move.
Type in a value of 0.25, 0.0, 0.0.

STEP ELEVENIn the perspective window hold down the Shift and Alt keys to bring up the viewing panel.
Select the preset bookmark named rail_crv.
In this view, Pick and Delete the construction plane.

STEP TWELVE
In the next few steps you will use the Monorail tool to sweep the generation curve around the provided rail curve.
Select Surfaces -> Swept surfaces -> Rail surface -> Options and set the following;
    Rail and Generation Curves to 1
    Rebuild Gen.1 and Rebuild rail 1 to ON
    Sweep Pivot from Closest to OFF CURVE
    Rotate Xform value to 36000.
This will set the degree of rotation for the generation curve to sweep around the rail curve.
Note: Keep the Monorail options window open for the next few steps.

STEP THIRTEEN
The prompt asks you to select the generation curve.
In the viewing panel go back to the close_up camera view and Pick the generation curve to make it active.

STEP FOURTEEN
The prompt then asks you to set the sweep pivot for the generation curve.
Hold down the Ctrl key to activate the magnet snap function and click near the rail curves' start point.
Click on the Go button.
